Summary

The Juno mission will orbit Jupiter in a highly eccentric polar orbit, providing an opportunity to measure the general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect and the planet's angular momentum. The mission's orbital configuration is ideal for this measurement, with the node being displaced by about 570 m over the mission's duration. However, systematic biases from the zonal harmonic coefficients of the jovian gravitational potential may affect the measurement. A linear combination of the node, periJove, and mean anomaly can cancel out the impact of some of these coefficients, and numerical simulations suggest that a 0.2-5% accuracy may be achievable. The measurement of the Lense-Thirring effect would provide important information about Jupiter's internal structure and formation, and would be a valuable test of general relativity.
