Summary

The stepwise synthesis of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a multistep microscale synthesis based on an industrial process, reflecting a decreasing reactivity accompanying the increasing degree of nitration. The synthesis involves three steps: mono-nitration of toluene to afford mononitrotoluene (MNT) oil, further nitration of MNT to afford a mixture of dinitrotoluenes, and final nitration to afford a crude product contaminated with unsymmetrical isomers. The final product is purified by recrystallization and characterized by IR or 'H-NMR spectrum. The synthesis is accessible to students with basic skills in microsynthesis and can be linked to modern analytical methods to monitor the progressive nitration.
