A cytogenetic study of 30 buffalo (15 river and 15 swamp) from south Iraq found differences in their karyotypes, with river buffalo having 2n = 48 chromosomes and swamp buffalo having 2n = 50 chromosomes. The subspecies differ by one chromosome, with a fusion between river buffalo chromosomes 4 and 9 comparable to swamp buffalo chromosome 1. Crosses between the two subspecies are fertile but hybrids have 49 chromosomes, which may lead to lower reproductive values.
