Summary

Extensive studies have shown that measuring mud flows into and out of a well during drilling provides the basis for detecting mud loss and temporary gain due to an influx of wellbore fluids, known as a 'kick'. Current field measurement techniques are inadequate, and a flow calibration facility was constructed at the British Gas Engineering Research Station to test various flow meters and techniques. The facility was designed to provide a test bed for measuring mud return flow, which is a difficult problem due to the dirty, sticky, non-Newtonian, and multiphase nature of the fluid. The facility includes a centrifugal pump, a 100 mm test section, and a 200 mm section that runs partially full, allowing for the simulation of real-world drilling conditions. A weigh tank is used as a standard against which each meter can be compared, and the flow is diverted into the weigh tank using valves and a timer. The aim of the facility is to provide a gravimetric standard to ±1.0%, which is sufficient for the requirements of 3 - 18% accuracy.
