Millions of tons of organic waste are disposed of in North Carolina landfills each year, disrupting the natural cycle of degradation and contributing to environmental problems. Conventional farming systems rely on synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, leading to negative side effects such as loss of topsoil and nutrient run-off. Compost utilization could offer a cost-effective remedy, but demand is low due to the availability of raw manures and effluents, and the high cost of compost compared to synthetic fertilizers. Local farmers who use compost report increased yields and economic viability, but more research is needed to demonstrate the benefits of compost use on a larger scale and to help farmers transition from chemical-based systems. A project was proposed to assess the economic impact of compost utilization in large-scale farming systems, focusing on high-value produce crops, and to collect data on the benefits of compost use over multiple growing seasons.
