Summary

The 25th International North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop featured a presentation on flare metering with optics, which was previously considered "blue-sky" technology. However, Photon Control has developed an Optical Flow Meter that has undergone laboratory and field testing, with over 25 units sold and installed. The presentation reviewed the development, testing, and deployment of the meter, including its technology, advantages, and shortcomings. The optical flow meter uses optical velocimetry to measure gas flow velocity, and can be subdivided into laser Doppler velocimeters and optical transit time velocimeters. The technology has been developed through a joint industry project with ConocoPhillips Canada, and has been installed in several locations, including eight ConocoPhillips Canada "Real World" installations and a Statoil facility. The presentation also discussed the accuracy of the L2F method, which can measure linear gas velocity with high accuracy independent of pressure, temperature, and gas composition.
