The 2023 Research Competition Guidelines outline the Game Changer Fund, established through the "We Cross Cancer" capital campaign, which aims to support innovative cancer research in Edmonton, Alberta. The fund will support up to four cancer research teams with up to $1.25 million each for up to four years. The goal is to enable research teams to capitalize on existing areas of research strength, boost cancer research impact, productivity, and capacity, and support collaborations that transcend traditional boundaries.

Applicants must submit proposals that describe their team, aims, objectives, and desired outcomes, and demonstrate how the funding will support new and transformative approaches to cancer research. The proposals will be evaluated on scientific merit, feasibility, and alignment with the funding competition's goal.

The funding can be used for equipment, supplies, trainee stipends, hiring temporary staff, and other eligible costs linked to achieving the research team's objectives. However, it cannot be used for clinical trials, commercialization of research discoveries, hiring permanent staff, facility renovations, or ongoing maintenance of equipment.

Researchers can be part of a maximum of two research team proposals, and an investigator can be a Principal Applicant on only one proposal. The application process involves submitting a Notification of Intent (NOI) within four weeks of the competition launch, followed by a full application.
