Invasive Species: Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife), introduced from Europe, has become an aggressive invader in North American wetlands, displacing native vegetation and damaging waterfowl habitat.

Biological Control Approach: Research focuses on using natural enemies to control purple loosestrife. Three species have been tested for host specificity:
Root-feeding weevil, Hylobius transversovittatus: Larvae damage roots severely with high infestation rates over several years. Release sites have been established in New York and Pennsylvania.
Leaf-feeding beetles, Galerticella calmariensis and G. ptisilla: Both species feed on leaves and stems, causing significant defoliation.

Release Plans: Releases of H. transversovittatus and initial releases of G. calmariensis and G. ptisilla are scheduled for August 1992.

Benefits:
Highly specific to purple loosestrife, minimizing impact on non-target plants.
Offers the most promising and cost-effective control method.
