Summary

Researchers developed a 4D printed bioinspired absorbable left atrial appendage occluder (LAAO) with tailored mechanical properties to reduce complications associated with commercial Nitinol-based occlusion devices. The LAAO was designed to match the deformation of left atrial appendage tissue and was fabricated using shape memory PLA-based magnetic nanocomposites. In vitro degradation tests and long-term subcutaneous implantation showed favorable biocompatibility and durability, and a rapid 4D transformation process was achieved under magnetic field trigger. The deployment of the LAAO in an isolated swine heart demonstrated its feasibility for transcatheter LAA occlusion.
