Summary

The model problem is −∆u + b · ∇u + cu = λu with u = 0 on ∂Ω, where b and c are functions in L∞(Ω) with c being non-negative. A novel iterative approach for solving this eigenproblem using adaptive hp-FEM is presented, which involves calling a generalized eigensolver only once and pursuing each eigenvalue-eigenvector pair on an individual mesh using adaptive hp-FEM combined with Newton or Picard methods. This approach avoids linear combinations in case of repeated eigenvalues and keeps focus on the selected eigenvalue-eigenvector pair. The algorithm iteratively refines the mesh and updates the eigenvalue and eigenvector until convergence.
