Summary

Friction is a major uncertainty factor in torque measurement in wind turbine test benches, with the friction torque of the load application system (LAS) reducing the applied torque and determining the input torque on the device under test (DUT). The knowledge of the friction torque is necessary for precise experimental investigations, such as efficiency measurement. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation method is introduced to determine the friction torque of the LAS, which is validated with experimental results. The friction torque of the LAS is quantified under different operation conditions, and its influence on the uncertainty of the MN·m measurement is compiled. The study aims to enhance the MN·m torque measurement accuracy, which is currently between 2% and 5%, to meet the industry and research facilities' requirements of 0.5%.
