Summary

Assembly systems face unpredictable resource and demand fluctuations due to global pandemic events, political restrictions, and product individualization. Line-less assembly systems (LAS) offer flexibility through individual job routes and adaptive layouts. However, controlling LAS requires an integrated online solution that combines scheduling and layout planning. Existing methods with fixed cycle times are not suitable for reactive layout optimization in LAS with mobile resources. This paper proposes an integrated online optimization architecture for layout evolution and simultaneous job scheduling to increase LAS efficiency. The optimization uses modular matching and scheduling algorithms, considering temporary station setup states and parallel processing based on zone restrictions. The proposed algorithms are connected to a modular discrete-event simulation and scenario analysis tool for LAS. Validation through an industry-based use case shows that the developed control system allows for shorter average lead-time, increased throughput, and utilization of mobile resources.
