The model shows that scattering peaks when the volume is divided into spheres of critical radii, which depend on the refractive index of the material relative to its surroundings. The effects of particle shape, crowding, and the refractive index of the surrounding medium on these predictions are also considered, with the goal of understanding how transparency is attained in biological tissues, particularly in oceanic zooplankton.
