Summary

- Original Study (Frid et al., 2019): Examined fish behaviors that could bias survey counts using towed-video cameras and parallel laser beams. Hypothesized that fish perceive laser dots as food and the camera as a threat. Predicted that chase probabilities would decrease with maximum age, group size, and be stronger for benthic feeders. A generalized linear mixed model supported these predictions.
- Issue: After publication, it was found that using "species" as a random effect might have correlated with the fixed effect of maximum age, potentially creating spurious results.
- Revised Analysis: Removed the "species" random effect, using a generalized linear model with binomial distribution. Strengthened support for maximum age effect in benthic feeders, but lost support for group size effect. No difference between primary and partial feeders of benthic mobile prey.
- Correction Equation: Proposed to correct biased counts based on the revised top model.
- Conclusion: Revised analysis strengthens the original argument that maximum age is an important predictor of behaviors that may bias counts in camera-based surveys using laser beams.

Description

We hypothesized that fish perceive laser dots as potential food and the camera as a threat, leading to biased survey counts.
