Summary

The use of plastic mulch in agriculture has increased due to benefits like increased soil temperature, reduced weed pressure, and higher crop yields. However, disposing of used plastic films has led to the development of photodegradable and biodegradable mulches. Biodegradable plastic films break down into carbon dioxide, water, and natural substances through microbial activity in soil. Polymers like poly(lactic acid) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) can degrade in bioactive environments. Despite benefits, removal and disposal of conventional polyethylene mulches remain a major constraint, and more knowledge is needed on the effects of biodegradable mulches on crop growth and soil biota.
