Summary

A retrovirus was isolated from a patient at risk for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), belonging to the family of human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV) but distinct from previous isolates. The virus, a typical type-C RNA tumor virus, was propagated in cultures of T lymphocytes and has an internal antigen similar to HTLV p24. Antibodies from the patient's serum reacted with proteins from HTLV-I viruses, but type-specific antisera to HTLV-I did not precipitate proteins of the new isolate. The virus was transmitted into cord blood lymphocytes, and the produced virus was similar to the original isolate, suggesting that this virus, along with previous HTLV isolates, belongs to a family of lymphotropic retroviruses that may be involved in several pathological syndromes, including AIDS.
