The procedure involves reacting the dimethyl sulfide complex of cuprous bromide with ethylmagnesium bromide and 1-octyne in diethyl ether at -45°C, followed by the addition of N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea and allyl bromide. The resulting mixture is warmed to -30°C, stirred for 12 hours, and then quenched with a saturated aqueous solution of ammonium chloride. The organic layer is washed, dried, and concentrated to yield 13.9 g (71%) of (E)-5-ethyl-1,4-undecadiene as a clear, colorless liquid.
