Summary

The brewing industry uses elemental analysis to determine nitrogen/protein and sulfur content in barley, malt, wort, and beer. The Thermo Scientific FlashSmart Elemental Analyzer uses combustion method as an alternative to the Kjeldahl method for nitrogen/protein determination and can also determine sulfur content. The analyzer operates by dynamic flash combustion of the sample, with gases carried by helium or argon flow to detectors. Results show the performance of the FlashSmart Elemental Analyzer using helium and argon as carrier gas for N/Protein determination in various brewery samples, with protein content calculated using a protein factor of 6.25. The analyzer demonstrates repeatability, accuracy, and precision, with advantages including low helium consumption and cost reduction.
