Summary

Sharks have experienced massive population declines worldwide over the past 50 years, with some species decreasing by up to 71%. Fisheries are the biggest driver of declines in marine ecosystem biodiversity, with an estimated 1.4 million tons of sharks taken in 2010 alone. Bycatch, where non-target species are taken incidentally, is a major component of shark take, and mitigation techniques are needed to reduce it. This review provides a comprehensive global assessment of technical mitigation measures to reduce shark bycatch in commercial fishing gear, including gear modifications and mitigation devices. The review identified 184 papers and reports, and categorized mitigation techniques into preventing capture, enabling escape, and decreasing at-vessel mortality/increasing post-release survival. The results show that various technical measures have been assessed and found to be effective in reducing shark bycatch, including removal of tickler chains, bait type, and magnet repellents, although effectiveness can vary depending on the fishery and gear type.
