Summary

The study investigated the antibacterial properties of crude extracts from raw and processed Prosopis juliflora (meskit) pods using the well-diffusion method. The tests revealed that raw pod extract exhibited stronger inhibition, with zones ranging from 13 to 20 mm, against all bacteria except Klebsiella spp., demonstrating a preference for Gram-positive over Gram-negative organisms. In contrast, processed pods (soaked and roasted) showed reduced activity, with the roasted pods only inhibiting Streptococcus spp. and Bacillus sp. to a lesser extent (10 mm and 6 mm zones of inhibition, respectively).

Dilution experiments determined the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) as follows: Staphylococcus aureus (250 mg/ml), Streptococcus spp. (62.5 mg/ml), Bacillus spp. (125 mg/ml), and Escherichia coli (125 mg/ml). Notably, the raw pod extract's MIC of 62.5 mg/ml was comparable to the effects of gentamicin (30 mg) and kanamycin (30 mg) against Streptococcus spp.

The findings suggest that Prosopis juliflora pods, particularly in their raw state, hold potential as a natural antibacterial agent. However, processing, especially roasting, significantly diminishes their antibacterial activity.
