He explains that after the discovery of artificial radioactivity by Joliot and Irene Curie using alpha-particles, he investigated the effects of neutron bombardment. Fermi found that neutrons, despite their low yield, can efficiently produce nuclear disintegrations due to their ability to reach nuclei without overcoming the Coulomb barrier. He used a radon-beryllium source to bombard elements, resulting in the activation of 37 out of 63 elements tested. Fermi identified three types of nuclear reactions that produce artificial radioactivity and noted that heavy elements usually react according to one type, resulting in an exponentially decaying activity. However, thorium and uranium exhibit unusual behavior, with induced activities showing multiple mean lives, and Fermi's team attempted to isolate the carriers of these activities, suggesting the presence of elements with atomic numbers larger than 92.
