Summary

Secondary ice production (SIP) is a key process in forming ice particles in tropospheric clouds, crucial for improving weather prediction and climate models. Six SIP mechanisms have been proposed: shattering during droplet freezing, rime-splintering, fragmentation due to ice-ice collision, ice particle fragmentation due to thermal shock, fragmentation of sublimating ice, and activation of ice-nucleating particles in transient supersaturation. Despite extensive research, there is a lack of consistency and gaps in knowledge, hindering the development of quantitative descriptions of these mechanisms. This review aims to identify gaps in SIP knowledge and stimulate further laboratory studies to obtain quantitative descriptions of each mechanism's efficiency.
