Summary

Researchers developed an automated optofluidic platform for Raman-activated microbial cell sorting (RACS) to analyze and sort live microbial cells based on their functional properties. The platform combines microfluidics, optical tweezers, and Raman microspectroscopy, allowing for the sorting of stable-isotope-probing-labelled microbial cells with high accuracy (98.3 ± 1.7%) and throughput (200–500 cells h−1). The platform was applied to study mucin degradation in the mouse colon, revealing a diverse consortium of bacteria involved in this process, including members of the underexplored family Muribaculaceae.
