Summary

Researchers studied the oxidation of limonene in the Cambridge Atmospheric Simulation Chamber (CASC) to understand the formation and properties of organic aerosols. They used various instruments, including an Online Particle-bound Reactive Oxygen Species Instrument (OPROSI) and Extractive Electrospray Ionisation (EESI) Mass Spectrometry, to quantify health-relevant oxidizing organic species and monitor individual organic species in real-time. The results showed two categories of reactive oxygen species (ROS): a short-lived component produced during precursor ozonolysis and a stable component that was long-lived. The study also observed multiphase aging via further ozonolysis reactions and the formation of volatile products, such as limonaketone and limonaldehyde. The findings demonstrate the utility of CASC for understanding the reactivity and health-relevant properties of organic aerosols.
