Summary

Researchers investigated the contribution of nitrogen from previous year's leaves and soil uptake to current year's leaf growth in 20-year-old sessile oaks. They used 15N labelling to track nitrogen partitioning in trees and soil, applying 15NH4NO3 to leaves in May, soil in September, and soil in March. Results showed that in autumn, roots' N reserves were formed from foliage 15N (73%) and soil 15N (27%). The following spring, 15N used for new leaf synthesis came from stored 15N (95%), mainly from foliage, and later from soil 15N uptake (60%). The study found that both stored nitrogen and soil nitrogen contribute to leaf growth, with stored nitrogen being the primary source in early spring and soil nitrogen becoming more important later.
