Summary

Accurate mapping of soil carbon in low relief areas is challenging due to the limitations of conventional "soil-landscape" models. This study explores the potential of land use types and percentages for soil mapping in plain areas, using 256 topsoil samples from Jianghan Plain, China. Results show that land use types and percentages can explain 24.7% of the variation in soil organic carbon (SOC) content, with paddy fields having higher SOC content than woodlands and irrigated lands. Regression Kriging (RK) models that combine land use types and percentages outperform other models, with the lowest errors and highest R-squared values. The study concludes that land use types and percentages are efficient indicators for SOC mapping in plain areas, and that irrigation facilities contribute to farmland SOC sequestration, especially in irrigated lands.
