Summary

Researchers at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" have upgraded the DATE (Digital Automatic Terrain Extractor) plug-in to include a new radargrammetric DSM (Digital Surface Model) generation capability, allowing for the use of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery for stereo reconstruction. The DATE plug-in is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) that was originally developed for automatic DSM generation from high-resolution optical satellite imagery. The new capability was tested using two stacks of three TerraSAR-X images each, acquired over Trento, Northern Italy, and achieved global accuracies of around 6 meters. The results are promising, and further analysis is expected to fully assess the application of DATE to SAR imagery.
