Summary

The Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) is the only fruit bat in Europe, found on Cyprus and Turkey. Its population on Cyprus has declined dramatically from 10,000 to 1,500 individuals between 2001 and 2010. The species' diet consists mainly of fruits, and assessing its diet is crucial for conservation and managing conflicts with farmers. A study analyzed 222 droppings from two cave roosts on Cyprus, identifying 11 plant species from 8 families. The most common food items were Melia azedarach, Morus spp., and Ceratonia siliqua. The study found that five of the plant species are commercially grown on Cyprus, but most were of secondary importance to the bats. The data can help manage food resources and improve conservation, but addressing other threats such as pesticide use and persecution is also essential.
