Summary

Researchers studied the effect of sodium alginate (SAG) as a depressant on the separation of talc and copper-nickel sulfide ore. SAG significantly depressed talc flotation while having less influence on sulfide flotation. Compared to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum, SAG gave the highest copper recovery, eliminating the need for a talc removal step and reducing depressant consumption by at least half. SAG adsorbs on the talc surface, promoting hydrophilization, as shown by contact angle tests and zeta potential measurements. Infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed that SAG absorbs on talc but not on chalcopyrite. The study suggests SAG as a potential alternative to guar gum, with a wider source and lower price.
