Distillation is a separation technology for liquid mixtures, with a history dating back to the first century A.D. Today, it is the most important industrial separation technology, particularly suited for high-purity separations. The separation factor is introduced to describe the degree of separation between two components in a column or section. The article aims to provide analytical expressions for understanding distillation fundamentals, including minimum energy requirements, minimum number of stages, and simple expressions for the separation factor. The derivation of these expressions is based on assumptions of equilibrium stages, constant relative volatility, and constant molar flows. The equilibrium stage concept is central to distillation, assuming vapor-liquid equilibrium on each stage. Vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) is described, and the general VLE relation is described. The K-value and relative volatility are defined, and their importance in computations is discussed.
