Summary

A study of 1,209 Y chromosome samples from Southeast Asia, Oceania, southern China, and Taiwan found that the majority of current Austronesian speakers trace their paternal heritage to Pleistocene settlers in the region, rather than more recent agricultural immigrants from northern populations. The northern Neolithic component is unevenly dispersed, with a higher contribution in Southeast Asia and a near absence in Melanesia. No ancestral Y chromosome lineages were found, excluding the possibility of significant gene flow between H. erectus and H. sapiens. The results suggest an indigenous origin for the Austronesian languages in Melanesia or Southeast Asia, contradicting the "express train to Polynesia" model.
