Summary

The protein p53 plays a crucial role in responding to DNA damage by stopping the cell cycle and initiating repair or apoptosis if the damage is irreparable. Mdm2 is a negative regulator of p53, binding to and inhibiting its activity, and is itself regulated by p53 in a negative feedback loop. When DNA damage occurs, p53 is stabilized and activated, leading to increased expression of genes involved in DNA repair and cell cycle arrest, while also inducing the expression of Mdm2, which eventually leads to the downregulation of p53 once the damage is repaired.
