Summary

The DeFishGear project aims to reduce environmental impacts of litter-generating activities in the Adriatic Sea. A methodology for monitoring macro-debris (>2.5cm) on beaches has been prepared, based on EU and OSPAR guidelines. Sites are selected randomly, considering factors like proximity to ports, river mouths, and urban areas. A 100-metre stretch of beach is monitored, with two sections per beach, and at least four surveys are carried out per year. Litter items are collected, identified, and recorded, with no upper size limit, and plastic pellets are collected separately. All litter items are removed from the beach, with larger items marked if they cannot be safely removed.
