Summary

Researchers from the University of California Cooperative Extension conducted two trials to evaluate the use of in-row cover crops in vineyards. The trials assessed the effects of cover crops on soil and plant nutrition, soil microbial biomass, soil moisture, and crop yield. The results showed that allowing cover crops to grow too tall (24 inches) was detrimental to crop growth and reduced nitrogen levels in the plants. However, killing the cover crops at 12 inches tall minimized competition with the vines and increased soil organic matter. The in-row cover crops also reduced soil moisture in early spring but increased it during the late growing season, possibly due to improved irrigation water infiltration. The study concluded that carefully managed in-row cover crops can provide long-term benefits to the soil under the vines, but may require additional nitrogen fertilization to offset the competitive effect on the vines.
