Summary

Millions of people suffer from bone and joint problems, with over a million surgeries annually. Synthetic Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used in medical applications due to its excellent properties, but its mechanical properties are low compared to cortical bone. Incorporating resistant oxide phases like Zirconia (ZrO2) can improve biocompatibility and mechanical properties. HA can be extracted from natural sources like bovine bones, and adding ZrO2 can increase density and improve properties. In this study, HA/ZrO2 bio-ceramic composites were fabricated from bovine bone with different ZrO2 concentrations, and their properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.
