Summary

A 27-year long-term field experiment studied the effects of composted farmyard manure (FYM) and biodynamic preparations on soil chemical and microbiological properties. The results showed that all composted FYM treatments had positive effects on soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, basal respiration, microbial biomass carbon, and nitrogen, compared to the control without FYM. The multi-substrate-induced respiration (multi-SIR) approach revealed significant general effects of biodynamic preparations and differentiated between the sole application of the Achillea millefolium preparation and the standard application of all 6 biodynamic compost preparations. The Achillea preparation improved the N status of the microbial community, as indicated by the higher catabolic use of certain amino acids.
