Summary

Fuel is the most important driver of the modern world, but major sources like oil, gas, and coal are non-renewable and diminishing, contributing to air pollution and climate change. Bio-energy from organic matter, including plants and animals, is a renewable alternative, with bioethanol being the most widely used biofuel for transportation. Bioethanol is derived from fermenting sugar components of plant material and can be used in unmodified petrol engines or as an additive for gasoline. However, using alcohols in diesel engines has limitations, and gasification is an advanced technology for converting biomass to clean bioethanol. Research objectives include determining optimal conditions for bioethanol production from rotten fruits and characterizing physicochemical properties of the produced bioethanol. Bioethanol production has tripled between 2000 and 2007, with Brazil and the US responsible for 89% of global production in 2009.
