Summary

The optimal design of biomass supply chains with integrated process design is presented, focusing on the conversion of raw materials into useful services, including heat, power, and synthetic bio-based fuels. A holistic approach is used, accounting for the integration of process design with the supply chain, and a MILP optimization problem is formulated to minimize the total cost. The approach is applied to the conversion of animal manure to different end products in southern Switzerland, revealing the predominance of large centralized bio-SNG producing units due to their higher conversion efficiency.
