Summary

Black Brook flows through a steep-sided valley in Back Forest near Gradbach, and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within the Black Brook Nature Reserve. The forest consists of mature woodland comprised predominantly of Oak and Birch with a large number of Japanese Larch. A project was undertaken to restore natural stream processes within the brook by installing 19 Large Woody Debris (LWD) log jams along a 1km reach of the watercourse, slowing down peak flows and enhancing the aquatic habitat for native wildlife. The work involved felling 59 trees, mostly non-native conifers, and creating log jams using a 'Chop n Drop' approach. The project required various consents, including Land Drainage Consent and a felling licence. The benefits of the project include reduced flow rates, improved habitat for wildlife, and increased biodiversity. The work has had a positive impact on the environment and habitat in the woodland, creating a sequence of pools and riffles, and increasing the number of perches for riparian birds.
