Summary

Microbial mats are "larger biofilms" that can leave records in sediments and the sedimentary rock record. They are formed by micro-organisms attached to a surface and embedded in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and can be found in various environments, including rock surfaces, soils, and sedimentary granular systems. Cyanobacteria are particularly successful in enlarging biofilms due to their morphologic variability and biostabilisation capacity.
