Most bulbs come from Mediterranean climates and do well in Sacramento's climate with careful planning. When selecting bulbs, avoid those with rot, fungus, or mildew, and store them in a cool, dark, and dry place. Plant bulbs shortly after purchasing, in well-draining soil with organic matter, and water thoroughly. After blooming, deadhead and allow leaves to yellow and die back to replenish the bulb. Divide and replant bulbs as they multiply, and manage pests like snails and squirrels. Hardy spring bulbs can be forced to produce winter blooms in containers.
