Summary

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a serious pathogen causing economic losses in cattle operations, with 4-17% of farms having persistently infected calves. BVDV infections have three clinical syndromes: acute, fetal, and persistent infection, resulting in fever, depression, diarrhea, reproductive problems, and more. The virus is transmitted through direct contact between animals, with persistently infected (PI) calves being lifelong carriers shedding millions of viral particles daily. Testing for BVDV involves submitting tissue or blood samples to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Prevention and management include not purchasing infected cattle, testing replacement animals, isolating new cattle, and vaccinating properly. The Mississippi Voluntary BVD Control Program offers a Certificate Level and Participation Level for producers to test and maintain PI-negative herds.
