Summary

Links between cancer and inflammation were first made in the nineteenth century, with observations that tumors often arose at sites of chronic inflammation and that inflammatory cells were present in biopsied samples from tumors. Epidemiological studies have shown that chronic inflammation predisposes individuals to various types of cancer, with underlying infections and inflammatory responses linked to 15-20% of all deaths from cancer worldwide. Inflammatory cells and mediators are present in the microenvironment of most, if not all, tumors, and signaling pathways involved in inflammation operate downstream of oncogenic mutations. The targeting of inflammatory mediators, key transcription factors, or inflammatory cells decreases the incidence and spread of cancer.
