Summary

Researchers have found that transitory amplifying cells (TACs) are involved in cardiomyogenesis in mammalian and zebrafish hearts, forming new cardiomyocytes throughout life, rather than mature cardiomyocytes. TACs are released from "cell-in-cell structures" (CICSs) and are able to divide and differentiate, with only small cells (D<13 µm) able to divide in the neonatal period. CICSs are present in the myocardium of adult mammals, embryos, and neonatal rats, and also in the adult myocardium of zebrafish, suggesting a common mechanism of cardiomyogenesis in mammals and zebrafish.
