Summary

An abrupt negative δ13C shift of 2‰-4‰ is reported, testifying to a rapid injection of 12C into the atmosphere-ocean system, likely caused by Wrangellia volcanism.

Heterogeneous accretion of the terrestrial planets and planetisimals is evidenced by the abundance and proportion of highly siderophile elements in Earth's mantle, suggesting a 'late veneer' of extraterrestrial material added after core formation. New data on HSE abundance and 187Os/188Os isotope for various meteorites demonstrate that late accretion is a common feature of differentiated planets and asteroidal bodies, with variations in HSE abundance related to body size and potentially accounting for volatile element budget and oxidation state.
