Summary

The Citrus Research Center and Agricultural Experiment Station (CRC-AES) of the University of California, Riverside, was established in 1907 as the Citrus Experiment Station, with its name changed in 1961 to reflect a broader scope of research. The CRC-AES is a leading center for research in citrus and subtropical horticulture, with a focus on areas such as general horticulture, plant breeding, irrigation, soils, plant nutrition, entomology, and biochemistry. The center's research has influenced production techniques worldwide and has solved numerous pest and disease problems that have threatened the California citrus industry. The CRC-AES has two main goals: to develop knowledge of plants important to agriculture in arid and semiarid subtropical climates, and to ensure the efficient use of natural resources and protect the environment. Citrus growers and their representatives lobbied for the establishment of the Citrus Experiment Station, which was mandated by the California State Legislature in 1905. The station's founder, John Henry Reed, a Riverside citrus grower, played a key role in its establishment. The citrus industry in California began to grow in the late 19th century, with the first orange grove planted in Los Angeles in 1841 by William Wolfskill. However, it wasn't until the 1880s that the industry started to expand, with the development of irrigated settlements in southern California, known as the "Citrus Belt.
