Researchers developed a quantitative index to identify structural brain injury in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients using brain electrical activity. They collected EEG data from 1470 patients at 16 US Emergency Departments and used three classifier methodologies: Ensemble Harmony, LASSO, and Genetic Algorithm. The results showed similar performance accuracy across the methodologies, with an average sensitivity of 97.5% and specificity of 59.5%. The technology demonstrated high sensitivity to CT-positive injuries, particularly life-threatening hematomas, and outperformed current ED guidelines for imaging. The study suggests the potential role of this technology in objective, rapid, and optimal triage of TBI patients.
