The Earth's surface temperature will continue to rise until at least 2050 due to past and future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with many changes being irreversible, especially in the ocean, ice sheets, and sea levels. To limit global warming to a specific level, net-zero CO2 emissions and strong reductions in other GHG emissions are necessary. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) approved the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) on August 6, 2021, which provides a comprehensive assessment of the natural science basis of climate change. The SPM warns that human influence has warmed the climate system, widespread and rapid changes have occurred, and further warming will lead to more frequent and intense extreme weather events. The IPCC has three working groups: WG I (natural science basis), WG II (impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability), and WG III (mitigation). The IPCC has produced five assessment reports, with the sixth report expected to be completed in 2022. The reports undergo a rigorous review process, including expert and government review, and are adopted by the IPCC. The IPCC has also produced special reports, including the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5) and the Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL).
