Summary

A study on Redwood Creek, California, investigated cold pool formation, which are thermally stratified pools with water temperatures 3°C lower than adjacent mainstem water. Four cold pools were studied in 1985, providing high-quality habitat for juvenile salmonids and adult summer steelhead. The study found that cold pools develop when cold hillslope groundwater, cool tributary flow, and/or mainstem intragravel flow enter and are concentrated in the channel, with a gravel bar essential to isolate cold water. Primary sources of cold water were mainstem intragravel flow and tributary flow, with baseflow discharges sustaining cold pools throughout the summer. Pool width-to-length ratio was related to pool-mainstem temperature differences, with longer and narrower pools being cooler.
