Summary

Researchers analyzed the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers, concluding that gravity alone explains the overall collapse. They disproved allegations of controlled demolition by showing that the video record of the collapse agrees with the motion history calculated from the differential equation of progressive collapse, but not with the free fall hypothesis. The size range of dust particles from pulverized concrete is consistent with the theory of comminution caused by impact, and less than 10% of the total gravitational energy was needed to produce this dust. The air ejected from the building during collapse reached speeds of almost 500 mph, explaining the loud booms and wide spreading of pulverized concrete and other fragments. The study also found that high steel temperatures are not necessary to explain the collapse, as tests showed that the yield strength of the steel used in the fire stories decreased significantly at temperatures as low as 150°C.
